Norway! Other worldly, laid back, remote, spectacular and rammed with virtually unridden, pristine singletrack. And just a short hop over the North Sea! We’ll be covering all the riding that makes Norway such a special place to ride your bike: from the city to the Fjords to the mountains! We’re off to a flying start with 2 days riding straight out of our Oslo lodgings. Norway’s capital has 300km of trails right on its doorstep, including steep forested enduro style stuff as well as more remote expeditions into the beautiful Nordmarka (north forest). The trails are surprisingly undeveloped, often rooty and a little bit rubbly, descending through fingers of forested valleys right into the city centre. And the magic thing is, when you’ve finished your artisan coffee and cake in a hip city bakery, you hop on the tram with your bike and get a tram uplift back to the top of the mountain. A city mountain biker’s dream!

Our next destination is the fjords! The area around Stryn and Hjelle, on Inniksfjorden at the head of the Nordfjord system, is typical fjordland riding – expect some hike-a-bike to stunning viewpoints followed by open flowing singletrack descending into steep forested tech and finally pasture to the valley floor. We will also pay a visit to the amazing trails of Sognefjord just over the glacier from Stryn, where the riding is even more epic. This is the kind of riding that makes Norway unique and unforgettable, where the long, long descents are just reward for some lung busting climbs and the vistas are truly jaw dropping!

We then move to the mountain village of Alvdal for 4 days if proper remoteness! Alvdal is a small community set in the rain shadow of the high Rondane National Park, and is comparatively dry and sunny. The riding in Alvdal will be a mix of big mountain pedally days and uplifted days with starts at around 1500 m above sea level, descending over the course of the day to the valley floor at 500 m. The local trail system has been developed by our hosts and they have done a perfect job. The skinny trails truly make the most of the stunning scenery, weaving through birch and pine forest and across high mountain plateaus where the ground is covered with beautiful pale green lichen which makes for a magic carpet landing in the event of an unplanned dismount!

Although Norway is a mountainous country, the roads are superbly engineered so our transfers will be comfortable and spectacular! The weather SHOULD be quite settled at this time of year, particularly on this drier side of Norway in the rain shadow!

Your Norway Accommodation

Location, location, location. Character, character, character. Yep! Our accommodation for this trip is mostly in traditional Norwegian hytte – think smart, small UK bunkhouse with wooden Scandi character and smaller bedrooms! In Oslo we will be staying right next to the trails with a handy tram stop giving us quick access to the mountains in one direction and the city’s vibrant bars and cool cafes in the other! In the fjords our Hytte is right on the water’s edge in the pretty hamlet of Hjelle at the head of Nordfjordland, with views up to mainland Europe’s largest icefield, the mighty Jostedalsbreen.

Finally our accommodation in Alvdal is in a beautiful mountain farmhouse with roaring log burners, a firepit to huddle round for a post ride bevvy, and a well stocked bike workshop on site! All accommodation is on a twin share basis. Please speak to us when booking if you would like to pay a supplement for a single room.

If you enjoy huge diversity in your tough, wild mountain biking then YES! You’re going to get fast flow, steeps, summits, forests, big mountains, rocks, roots, nearly 100% singletrack and a beautiful Scandinavian vibe thrown in for free! Although we will be riding for 9 straight days, don’t mlet this put you off! Five of those days will start with an uplift, so you can expect much more down than up on these days, and two of the days will be rides of no more than 2 or 3 hours. So grab your knee pads, your coat and your Troll mates and matesses and sign up!
